If you guessed Gestational Diabetes you are correct! I'm adding it to the list with my subchorionic hemorrhage and anemia. At least all of my ailments make for a good pregnancy series. I mean how boring would it be if I was healthy?

But in all seriousness, for those of you who have never been pregnant or are on your first pregnancy, it's a process to even get diagnosed. I first went and took a “One Hour Glucose Test.” It's simple, they give you a sugary drink and then test your blood an hour later. I obviously failed. Then you move onto a “Three Hour Glucose Test.” Not going to lie, it wasn't fun. For this test they have you fast for 12 hours, then they test your blood. After those results are back you get a sugary drink that is twice as sugary as in the one hour test. They test your blood every hour for three hours. I failed everyone of my glucose tests.

So that is how I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. I sort of figured I had it, because my vision would frequently go blurry. My OB/GYN Dr. Robert Aepli says Gestational Diabetes is a metabolic problem during pregnancy where the body is not producing enough insulin to control glucose metabolism. It is a temporary problem, that doesn't greatly impact the pregnancy. It's often handled with diet, but in some cases oral medication or insulin is needed.

To treat my Gestational Diabetes I will be meeting with a dietician to work out a new diet plan to help balance my glucose levels. Also, I will have to use a glucometer to test my blood three times a week. Dr. Aepli says I should expect to have one to three more ultrasounds so they can keep a close eye on the baby's growth. Also, I may have to have a non-stress test, which will measure the baby's heartbeat.

In all, it looks like I'll be having a lot more tests. Tune into the WHIZ News at 6 o'clock on Friday to see what tests the majority of pregnant women will encounter.
