Zanesville Boys Start with a Loss, MVL Girls in Full Swing

East Liverpool 60 Zanesville 56

The young, unproven Blue Devils hit a stumbling block right out of the gate to start the 2011-12 season. A rash of turnovers and a lack of defensive prowess allowed the Potters to take a second half lead and never look back. Zanesville led by two points at haftime, but surrendered the lead to the Potters int he third quarter, and never regained it. Marky Thompkins led the second half push, sparking East Liverpool with 11 of his 13 points int he second half. Leading all scorers was the Potters' Mow Mow Thompson, who tallied 21 in the victory. Christian Meyers led the Blue Devils with 15 points. Zanesville next plays on the road at Marietta Friday night.

Girls

Crooksville 53 New Lexington 40

The Ceramics used a hot start to knock off the host Panthers on Saturday afternoon 53-40.  Taylor German was the star of the day for Crooksville, scoring 17 points, including nine straight in the second quarter, and six assists.  The Panthers had opportunities early on to tie or take the lead, but turnovers inside cost the team.  Both teams hit the road for their next games on Wednesday.  The Panthers travel to John Glenn while the Ceramics head up the road to Sheridan.

West Muskingum 47 Sheridan 35

The Generals could not overcome turnovers and a 16-point halftime deficit in losing to the Tornadoes 47-35.  Both teams struggled coming out of the locker room, combining for six points with Sheridan cutting the deficit to 38-26.  In the fourth quarter, Stephanie Imes scored six of her 10 points in the final frame, including the first five for her team in the quarter to seal the win.  Amisha Herd led all scorers with 11 for West Muskingum while Devyn Hickman had eight points in the loss for Sheridan.  The Tornadoes have Wednesday off while the Generals returns to the court, hosting Crooksville.
