Newark Catholic falls short of state title

After rolling over four consecutive playoff opponents, the Green Wave didn't have enough momentum left on Friday morning at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium is Massillon. Newark Catholic jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the Marion Local Flyers after junior quarterback Chayce Crouch dove up the middle early in the second quarter for the game's first score. The Green Wave held a 7-6 lead at halftime and started the third quarter with a 76-yard touchdown toss from Crouch to junior wideout Aaron Jurden to go up by eight points.

After a back and forth through the third quarter, the Flyers and Green Wave were tied at 21 early in the fourth quarter. Marion Local's touchdown with just seconds left to play put Newark Catholic at a 28-21 disadvantage - but Crouch drove his team down to the Marion Local five-yard line in three plays. On the final play, an out-route to the end zone was batted away and the Green Wave was out of time and out of chances. With a 28-21 victory, Marion Local captured its second consecutive state championship.
