For a program without a winning record since the late 90's, the Muskingum University football team is a pretty confident bunch. Tuesday at the annual OAC Media Days in Canton, the Muskies were picked to finish seventh in the conference, the exact spot they finished a year ago. But head coach Al Logan and returning players believe that this could be a breakthrough season.
"I think we're real close to being one of the better teams in this conference, I really do," said Logan. "It's taken seven years to get to this point. But you look at last year's games and losing a close game against Baldwin Wallace and losing on the last play against Ohio Northern, our record last year would have been a lot different."
Muskingum finished their 2012 campaign with a 3-7 record. However, they did cap off their season in style, with two big wins over Capital and Marietta, including a 13-6 overtime victory on Senior Day over the Crusaders. Logan knows that the Muskies aren't far from turning their fortunes around.
Muskingum senior cornerback Darell Jones anchors another strong defense for the Muskies this upcoming season, and is confident that better days are ahead.
"Honestly, I feel that our biggest problem would be ourself, Jones said. "If we can learn to work better as a team, I feel that we'll be pretty good."
Jones, along with fellow seniors OL Denny Ardman, and WR James Washington were named to the Preseason 2013 Division III OhioCollegeFootball.com All-Ohio Team. The Muskies begin their fall camp next week in New Concord. Their first game is September 7th at Waynesburg University with a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
