Pittsburgh players vote Hines Ward as their team MVP for the second straight season. Ward is headed to his 3rd Pro Bowl, is in the midst of his 3rd straight thousand-yard receiving season, and thinks the honor is the biggest he's ever won.

Ohio State defensive coordinator Mark Dantonio has been named head coach at the University of Cincinnati.

Dantonio, who is from Zanesville won’t have to wait long to play against his former friend and boss, Jim Tressel.

The Bearcats open the 2004 season at Ohio State on September fourth.

Dantonio, who graduated from Zanesville High School, has spent the past three seasons at Ohio State.

Jay Payton enjoyed a career year for Rockies in 2003.

So naturally the Zanesville native will spend next season with a different team.

Kevin Martin must be over the flu.

And now the nation's leading scorer feels really good.

Martin (Zanesville) led Western Carolina to a stunning upset at Arkansas 62-59 in overtime Monday night. The 6-7 junior guard poured in 33 points and grabbed six rebounds in WCU's second win ever against an SEC opponent in 28 attempts.

The Lady Generals didn't steal this win.

But steals played a big part. And so did defense.

Sheridan (8-0) remained unbeaten, defeating Lakewood 57-33 Monday night at Sheridan Gym.

The Lady Generals forced 25 Lakewood turnovers, generated 17 steals, and forced the Lady Rangers to shoot under 20 percent for the game.

A former Newark Catholic football player won his third bowl game.

This time as a coach.

Shane Montgomery, NC class of '85, helped lead Miami (OH) past Louisville 49-28 in the GMAC bowl in Mobile, AL.

Montgomery is the team's offensive coordinator.

Ben Roethlisberger threw for 376 yards and four touchdowns for Miami. After the game, the junior quarterback declared his intentions to enter the NFL draft.

Cincinnati's magical season will continue after the Super Bowl.

The Bengals' Chad Johnson and Willie Anderson were selected Thursday to the AFC pro-bowl team.

Johnson leads the AFC in yards receiving with 1,211. The wide-out also has 79 receptions with 10 touchdowns, each ranking in the top 10 of the conference.

Anderson has made 62 consecutive starts for Cincinnati. He has played all 8 of his NFL seasons with the Bengals.

The elbow hurt more than just the target.

Ohio State basketball coach Jim O'Brien suspended forward Matt Sylvester one game for elbowing a player in Ohio State's win Wednesday night against Furman.

Sylvester, 6-7 sophomore, will not travel with Ohio State, which visits Seton Hall this weekend.

"What Matt did is unacceptable and he needs to learn his leason," O'Brien said on the Ohio State athletics website.

The Cleveland Browns’ Hall of Fame quarterback Otto Graham has died.

He was 82. A team spokesman says Graham died wednesday at a hospital in Sarasota, Florida after being hospitalized earlier in the day with a heart condition.

Graham took coach Paul Brown’s team to a championship game in each season he played.
