Zanesville native and former Colorado Rockie Jay Payton, signs a multi-year contract with the San Diego Padres Tuesday afternoon. According to the San Diego Union Tribune Payton is expected to make a reported 1.5 million this season, the 3.5 million in 2005. The Padres will have a club option for a fourth year worth four-million dollars.
Cleveland signs pitcher David Riske to a one-year contract Monday. Riske became the Tribe's closer at the end of last season, but should start the year as a set-up man with closer Bob Wickman returning from injury.
Cincinnati signs pinch hitter John Vander Wal to a one-year, $700,000 deal. Vander Wal led the majors in grand slams last year with three.
Kevin Martin, held to a season-low 10 points in the Catamounts' previous game, scored 42 in WCU's 81-72 win against Elon Saturday.

Girls varsity Head Coach Ray Lynn resigned early Friday before the team practiced. WHIZ has learned that assistant Doug Whiteman will take over the head coaching reins for the rest of the year. As of now, all of the coaches on staff will do their best to help each other out. No word yet if the school's looking for another head coach or another assistant coach.
Maurice Clarett's lawyers are looking to settle the misdemeanor case regarding an exaggerated police report... Clarett had pled innocent originally, but willing to plead guilty to a lesser charge that wouldn't appear on his criminal record
Major changes may be on the way for NASCAR this year. The sport is considering a proposal where only the top 10 drivers after 26 races would be eligible to win the championship. Those 10 would compete over the final 10 races of the season.
The discussions come after Matt Kenseth won the 2003 Winston Cup Championship despite only winning one race during the year. Ryan Newman won eight races but finished sixth in the final standings.
Ohio State wide receiver Santonio Holmes pleaded not guilty in Franklin County Municipal Court Thursday to charges of disorderly conduct. Holmes, backup OSU quarterback Troy Smith, and five women were charged following a fight outside a dorm in November. It was the night after Ohio State defeated Purdue. Smith's due in court next month.
