OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Jim Johnson just never got comfortable with the Oakland Athletics. A slow start for the two-time AL saves leader turned into a nightmare.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Antonio Gates joined his San Diego Chargers teammates for the first practice of training camp a day after his 22-year-old sister died after battling lupus for three years.

The star tight end missed most of offseason workouts to be in Detroit with sister Pamela.

Gates lauded coach Mike McCoy for letting him deal with his sister's illness. Last season, Gates would often fly to Detroit after road games to be with his sister....

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — Jarrod Lyle shot a 4-under 67 on Thursday in the Tour's Midwest Classic, the Australian's first U.S. event since his second bout with leukemia.

The 32-year-old Lyle, travelling with wife Briony and 2-year-old daughter Lusi, had four front-nine birdies in his bogey-free round at the Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate. He was three strokes behind leader Paul Haley II after the morning session.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics have designated right-hander Jim Johnson for assignment before Thursday's game against the Houston Astros.

Johnson, acquired in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles, was 4-2 with a 6.92 ERA in 38 games with the A's.

Brought in to replace Grant Belfour as the team's closer, Johnson faltered early, blowing his first two chances before losing his job.

CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) — Geno Smith was sharp in his first practice of training camp, a good start for the second-year quarterback who is hoping to retain his starting job.

With Michael Vick also in camp to push Smith and provide a veteran backup, Rex Ryan is pleased with the Jets' quarterback situation. On Thursday, Smith took the expected 75 percent of the snaps with the first-team offense, and completed seven of 10 passes in 11-on-11 team drills.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Cole Hamels pitched eight strong innings and Chase Utley had a tiebreaking RBI single in the fifth inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.

Hamels (5-5) got the better of Tim Hudson in a matchup between starters who have combined for seven All-Star appearances. The Philadelphia left-hander gave up six hits while striking out 10 and walking one.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Yani Tseng made a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to give Taiwan a sweep of the top-seeded United States team Thursday in the opening round of the International Crown.

Tseng and Phoebe Yao never trailed in a 1-up win over Stacy Lewis and Lexi Thompson. Earlier, Candie Kung and Teresa Lu beat Paula Creamer and Cristie Kerr 4 and 3.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady is starting his 15th NFL training camp and still feels there's room for improvement.

He says the goal is to get better whether a player is the newest one on the team or the oldest. Brady will be 37 on Aug. 3 and is the oldest New England Patriots player by more than three years.

He took turns throwing passes with Ryan Mallett and Jimmy Garoppolo as camp began. Mallett is in his fourth camp with New England and...
