OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — Jarrod Lyle shot a 4-under 67 on Thursday in the Web.com Tour's Midwest Classic, the Australian's first U.S. event since his second bout with leukemia.
The 32-year-old Lyle, travelling with wife Briony and 2-year-old daughter Lusi, had four front-nine birdies in his bogey-free round at the Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate. He was three strokes behind leader Paul Haley II after the morning session.
CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) — Geno Smith was sharp in his first practice of training camp, a good start for the second-year quarterback who is hoping to retain his starting job.
With Michael Vick also in camp to push Smith and provide a veteran backup, Rex Ryan is pleased with the Jets' quarterback situation. On Thursday, Smith took the expected 75 percent of the snaps with the first-team offense, and completed seven of 10 passes in 11-on-11 team drills.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Cole Hamels pitched eight strong innings and Chase Utley had a tiebreaking RBI single in the fifth inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.
Hamels (5-5) got the better of Tim Hudson in a matchup between starters who have combined for seven All-Star appearances. The Philadelphia left-hander gave up six hits while striking out 10 and walking one.
