PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns waived guard Dionte Christmas on Thursday.

The former Temple player averaged 2.3 points, 1.2 rebounds and 6.4 minutes in 31 games last season as a rookie. He averaged 10.6 points and 5.6 rebounds in five summer league games this month in Las Vegas.

Before joining the Suns, Christmas played in Israel, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Greece, Russia and Italy.

CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) — Running back Chris Johnson was a full participant at practice for the first time since joining the New York Jets after recovering from offseason knee surgery.

Johnson signed with the Jets in April and said Thursday his right knee feels good. He had surgery to repair torn cartilage after playing with the injury most of last year.

NEW YORK (AP) — The pitching-poor Texas Rangers have signed right-hander Jerome Williams and plan to start him Friday night against AL West-leading Oakland.

The Rangers announced after Thursday's 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees that they had acquired the 32-year-old Williams.

Williams was released by Houston earlier this month after going 1-4 with a 6.04 ERA in 14 relief appearances.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Jim Johnson just never got comfortable with the Oakland Athletics. A slow start for the two-time AL saves leader turned into a nightmare.

The star tight end missed most of offseason workouts to be in Detroit with sister Pamela.

Gates lauded coach Mike McCoy for letting him deal with his sister's illness. Last season, Gates would often fly to Detroit after road games to be with his sister....

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — Jarrod Lyle shot a 4-under 67 on Thursday in the Tour's Midwest Classic, the Australian's first U.S. event since his second bout with leukemia.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics have designated right-hander Jim Johnson for assignment before Thursday's game against the Houston Astros.

Johnson, acquired in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles, was 4-2 with a 6.92 ERA in 38 games with the A's.

CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) — Geno Smith was sharp in his first practice of training camp, a good start for the second-year quarterback who is hoping to retain his starting job.

With Michael Vick also in camp to push Smith and provide a veteran backup, Rex Ryan is pleased with the Jets' quarterback situation. On Thursday, Smith took the expected 75 percent of the snaps with the first-team offense, and completed seven of 10 passes in 11-on-11 team drills.
