ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — When Drew Smyly struck out six straight Angels early on, even the Detroit Tigers were dazzled by their left-hander's dominance.

That excellence didn't last into the sixth, and Los Angeles put together just enough offense to beat a pitcher who had looked unbeatable for five innings.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Yasiel Puig tied a franchise record with three triples and added a double and two RBIs as the Los Angeles Dodgers moved within a half-game of NL West-leading San Francisco by beating the Giants 8-1 on Friday night.

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — Sisters Courtney and Brittany Force topped qualifying Friday night after the first two sessions in the NHRA Sonoma Nationals.

Courtney Force led the Funny Car field with a 4.045-second pass at 319.22 mph in a Ford Mustang, and Brittany Force took the Top Fuel lead with a 3.762 at 325.53.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Kaylin Whitney of Florida overcame a yellow card to win the 200 meters Friday night in the IAAF world junior championships at Hayward Field.

The world youth record holder in the event, Whitney was shown a yellow for what appeared to be a false start but she was not disqualified, going on to win in a wind-aided 22.82 seconds. At 16, she became the youngest gold medalist at the international event that runs through Sunday.

ATLANTA (AP) — Alex Wood's shoulders slumped as he turned to watch Tommy Medica's grounder skip into center field to open the fifth inning.

It was that kind of night for Atlanta's left-hander: A lot of ground balls. A lot of hits.
