CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Hornets announced they've signed free agent point guard Brian Roberts.

Roberts, who spent the last two seasons with the Pelicans, is expected to backup Kemba Walker in Charlotte this season.

Hornets general manager Rich Cho said in a release Wednesay, "Brian is a quality point guard who we believe will play a key role for us. We look forward to having him as part of our team."

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars signed rookie defensive back Deion Belue on Wednesday and waived rookie running back Beau Blankenship.

The 5-foot-11, 182-pound Belue played two seasons at Alabama after beginning his career at Northeast Mississippi Community College. He started his final two seasons with the Crimson Tide, totaling three interceptions, 13 passes defensed and 7 1/2 tackles for loss.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The NFL has suspended Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Ace Sanders without pay for the first four games of the season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

CHICAGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres purchased the contract of outfielder Jeff Francoeur from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

In nine seasons in the majors, Francoeur hit .263 with 140 home runs and 618 RBIs. He played with the Braves, Mets, Rangers, Royals and Giants.

The Padres signed Francoeur to a minor league deal in March. He failed to make the major league roster and hit .294 with 15 home runs and 60 RBIs with El Paso.

SEATTLE (AP) — While trying to help his batters solve Bartolo Colon, Seattle manger Lloyd McClendon couldn't avoid thinking about the possible outcome as the later innings arrived.

DENVER (AP) — Free-agent NHL defenseman Cory Sarich is recovering in a Calgary hospital after a cycling accident this week.

His agent, Tim Hodgson, released a statement Wednesday saying that Sarich was airlifted to the hospital after being hit by a motor vehicle in Invermere, British Columbia. The release said the extent of Sarich's injuries isn't known, but were not considered life-threatening. He remains in stable condition.
