FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The New England Patriots have released defensive lineman Marcus Forston and tight end D.J. Williams.

Forston had three tackles in three games for the Patriots last season. Williams had no catches in two games.

The Patriots originally signed Forston in May 2012 as an undrafted free agent from Miami. He played one game and spent most of that season on the team's practice squad.

Williams was drafted by the...

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Nobody got hurt Thursday in several skirmishes that broke out during team drills between Denver's record-shattering offense and Houston's swaggering defense.

Texans talkative safety D.J. Swearinger was once again in the middle of the biggest fracas. Tempers flared when running back Montee Ball was shoved after the whistle. Several players ended up on the ground in all the pushing and shoving that followed, including Denver receiver Emmanuel...

ATLANTA (AP) — Michael Cooper remembers the day well. The sun was shining bright, yet the notorious Atlanta heat wasn't too stifling. The sky was a brilliant blue, speckled with only a few puffy white clouds.

As he looked out the eighth-floor window, all seemed right with the world. His job was going well. His wife and young son were good.

Then, the doctor delivered one word that changed everything.

Cancer.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Taylor Kelly has been met with doubt most of his life, from his days as a scrappy youth basketball player to his current role as the undisputed leader of No. 19 Arizona State.

No matter how many times he's been marginalized or overlooked, the fifth-year senior usually finds a way to win.

Using slights about his ability as motivation, Kelly has turned himself into a proven winner and one of the best quarterbacks in college football...

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Phil Hughes has been pitching with a cracked nail on his right index finger, a common side effect of the sharp curveball he throws. He's kept the nail intact with super glue.

The big righty has done a nice job of holding the Minnesota Twins' rotation together, too.

Kennys Vargas homered and sparked rallies with two other hits, leading Hughes and the Twins past Corey Kluber and the Cleveland Indians 4-1 Thursday.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays overcame a masterful performance by David Price.

Price allowed only a first-inning RBI triple to Brandon Guyer in his first start against his former team, and Alex Cobb and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 1-0 Thursday to avoid a three-game sweep.

"It's weird," Guyer said. "I've never seen a win like that."

Ben Zobrist reached on a throwing error by shortstop Eugenio Suarez...
