Axelrod recalled for start against Cubs

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Reds have recalled right-hander Dylan Axelrod to start against the Cubs on Thursday.

Axelrod was obtained from the Chicago White Sox for cash on July 16. He started Aug. 17 against the Rockies and was optioned back to Triple-A Louisville the next day. Axelrod left the game with a lead but a blown save gave him a no-decision.

The Reds optioned right-hander Daniel Corcino to Louisville.


Brown among Ali Humanitarian Award winners

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Muhammad Ali is honoring another iconic athlete who became a key figure in the civil-rights movement — Jim Brown.

The NFL Hall of Fame running back will receive a lifetime humanitarian achievement award bearing the boxing great's name.

Brown headlines a lineup of Ali Humanitarian Award winners announced Thursday that includes actress Susan Sarandon. The Academy Award winner will receive the award for global citizenship for charitable work that includes serving as an ambassador for UNICEF.


Jets' Patterson: AWOL claims 'completely false'

NEW YORK (AP) — Suspended cornerback Dimitri Patterson says in a statement to ESPN that the New York Jets' claims that he went missing for 48 hours without notifying the team are "completely false."

Patterson was suspended Tuesday for the rest of the preseason after he left the team, according to the Jets, last Friday night before the preseason game against the Giants without speaking to anyone in the organization.

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Bob Diaco says he's not nervous as he begins his first season as a collegiate head coach, just excited to see where his UConn team is fewer than nine months after he was hired to turn around the Husky program.

Perennial power BYU is looking to provide more than a measuring stick for the former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Friday when the Cougars and Heisman candidate quarterback Taysom Hill visit East Hartford for a nationally televised game.


Don't expect miracles from Di Maria, Van Gaal says

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says instant miracles shouldn't be expected from Angel Di Maria.

After missing out on European football this season with a disappointing seventh-place finish in the Premier League in May, United slumped to a 4-0 loss to third-tier club MK Dons in the League Cup on Tuesday.

The 20-time English champions were still able to attract one of the world's top players in Di Maria, the Argentina midfielder who joined from Real Madrid for 75 million euros ($99 million).

Chiney Ogwumike of Sun wins WNBA rookie of year

Chiney Ogwumike always enjoyed following her sister's path. Now the Connecticut Sun player joins her as a winner of the WNBA rookie of the year award.

Ogwumike received the award Thursday at a news conference in Connecticut. Attending was sister Nneka of the Los Angeles Sparks, the league's rookie of the year in 2012, and their father. This is the first time siblings have won the award.

Chiney Ogwumike, the No. 1 pick in last April's draft, averaged 15.5 points and 8.5 rebounds.


Russian football union to meet with UEFA, FIFA

MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian Football Union says it will attend UEFA and FIFA-mediated talks next month to resolve a dispute with Ukraine over the clubs in Crimea.

Three clubs from Crimea, a region in Ukraine annexed by Russia in March, debuted in Russian league and cup competitions this month, but UEFA has refused to recognize any matches they play.

RFU president Nikolai Tolstykh told Russian media that talks with the Football Federation of Ukraine on the issue would be held Sept. 18 at UEFA headquarters.

Olympics, Paralympics look for volunteers in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The organizers of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics and Paralympics are recruiting 70,000 volunteers for the games that begin in less than two years.

Rio organizers opened the recruitment program on Thursday, looking for 45,000 people for the Olympics and 25,000 for the Paralympics.

Organizers will recruit from abroad as well as in Brazil.
