Alvarez hit go-ahead HR, Pirates hold off Cubs 5-4

CHICAGO (AP) — Pedro Alvarez hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run seventh inning and Jason Grilli retired Emilio Bonifacio on a bases-loaded grounder to end the game, giving the Pittsburgh Pirates a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.

The Pirates trailed 4-0 heading into the seventh, but two big drives changed things.

Pinch hitter Travis Snider cut the deficit in half with a two-run homer off Brian Schlitter. Alvarez put Pittsburgh ahead with his three-run drive against James Russell (0-1).

Six Queens wins Big A feature

NEW YORK (AP) — Six Queens, the even-money favorite, easily dispatched three rivals Thursday in the $60,800 allowance feature for fillies and mares at Aqueduct.

Luis Saez patiently kept Six Queens in reserve as Elena Strikes and Love to Score battled for the lead through swift early fractions. Six Queens came rolling late, improving to 3-1-0 in four starts. The 5-year-old trained by Kiaran McLaughlin paid $4 and $2.40 for the 3¾-length victory.

Elena Strikes held on for second, returning $2.90. Hot Rendezvous was third.

Rangers 3B Beltre has mild left quad strain

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Adrian Beltre has a mild left quadriceps strain that will keep him out of the lineup a few days, but the Texas Rangers plan to wait and see if their third baseman can avoid a trip to the disabled list.

General manager Jon Daniels said Thursday that team physician Dr. Keith Meister was "pleasantly surprised" that the strain wasn't as severe as initially thought.

Beltre came out of Tuesday's game at Boston, then returned home for the exam and an MRI. The Rangers were off Thursday off before a 10-day homestand.

Tony La Russa awed by Baseball Hall of Fame

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Tony La Russa has toured the Baseball Hall of Fame, and says he's "getting overwhelmed."

La Russa, the third-winningest manager in major league history, took in the sights Thursday in preparation for his induction this summer.

The 69-year-old La Russa, who led Oakland to the 1989 World Series title and the St. Louis Cardinals to championships in 2006 and 2011, was unanimously elected in December by the Hall of Fame's expansion-era committee along with former managerial colleagues Bobby Cox and Joe Torre.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Matthew Stafford will be on the spot this year for the Detroit Lions, and the 26-year-old quarterback understands that.

"In the NFL, if your quarterback plays really well, your team generally plays pretty well," Stafford said Thursday. "We're no different than any team. So the better I play, the better we're going to play as a team."

3 NFL players named in police report, not charged

MIAMI (AP) — Detectives in Miami say three NFL players are named in a police report involving a woman who passed out in a hotel, though no one has been charged with a crime.

The Miami Police Department report released Thursday says the woman told police she was in a hotel room April 1 with San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and wide receiver Quinton Patton, and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Ricardo Lockette.

Utah State's Wells agrees to contract extension

LOGAN, Utah (AP) — Utah State football coach Matt Wells has agreed to a contract extension through the 2018 season.

Athletic director Scott Barnes said Thursday that Wells' deal could pay over $800,000 annually with incentives and includes guaranteed step increases in each year of his contract.

Wells was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach in December 2012 after Gary Anderson left for Wisconsin. In his first season, Wells led the Aggies to a 9-5 record, capped by a victory over Northern Illinois in the Poinsettia Bowl.

No findings released on death of Ultimate Warrior

PHOENIX (AP) — Authorities in Phoenix don't expect to release any results just yet from an autopsy on the body of former pro wrestler The Ultimate Warrior.

Maricopa County spokeswoman Cari Gerchick says the county Medical Examiner's Office had no plans to issue any preliminary findings on the autopsy, which was done Thursday.

The 54-year-old wrestler, whose given name was James Hellwig, collapsed Tuesday while walking with his wife to their car at a Scottsdale hotel and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Sporting KC defender Opara likely out for season

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Sporting Kansas City defender Ike Opara will have surgery on his injured right ankle and is likely to miss the rest of the MLS season.

The club says Thursday that the April 16 surgery will repair cartilage damage. Opara had to be helped from the field after colliding with Colorado Rapids defender Jared Watts on March 29.

Sporting KC acquired Opara before the 2013 season. The 25-year-old center back has played 30 games in all competitions for the club over the last two years.
