Maryland transfer Cleare signs with Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Former Maryland center Shaquille Cleare has signed to play the rest of his college basketball for Texas.

Texas said in a statement Thursday that Cleare signed a scholarship agreement and plans to enroll in classes this summer. Although he'll train and practice with the Longhorns, he'll be ineligible under NCAA rules to play until the 2015-16 season when he'll have two seasons of eligibility left.

Maryland granted Cleare and guards Nick Faust and Roddy Peters releases to transfer earlier this month.


Red Sox RF Victorino off DL for 1st time this year

BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino has been activated from the disabled list and inserted into the lineup for the first time this season.

He batted in his usual second spot against the New York Yankees after missing the first 22 games with a hamstring injury and the flu.

In his first year with Boston in 2013, Victorino batted .294 with 15 homers, 61 RBIs and 21 stolen bases and was an outstanding fielder. In three rehab games this year at Triple-A Pawtucket, Victorino went 1 for 11.


Cal guard Ricky Kreklow to transfer

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — California guard Ricky Kreklow is transferring to another school for his senior season.

Kreklow said in a statement through the university Thursday that it "was not an easy decision." He also said transferring "is not related in any way to the change in coaching staff at Cal."

Cal hired former Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin last week. Mike Montgomery retired in March after six seasons in Berkeley.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma says his team needs more from stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin heading into Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against surprising Columbus.

The Blue Jackets tied the series at two games apiece with a 4-3 overtime win Wednesday night. The Penguins blew a three-goal lead in the loss, including giving up the tying goal after a miscue by goalie Marc-Andre Fleury in the final seconds of regulation.

AVONDALE, La. (AP) — Ben Martin treated a tiny gallery to a course-record round, shooting a 10-under 62 on Thursday in the first round of the Zurich Classic.

Martin's 10th birdie was his most spectacular shot in a round full of them as he chipped in from 55 feet on the par-3 17th hole. That came a hole after the 26-year-old former Clemson player he hit the flag on a chip from behind the green, setting up a tap-in par.


Villanova wins Penn Relays distance medley relay

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Emily Lipari led Villanova to its third straight Penn Relays women's distance medley relay championship Thursday, catching Stanford's Aisling Cuffe on the mile anchor leg.

Villanova won in 10 minutes, 57.35 seconds — 0.29 seconds ahead of Stanford.


Padres 3B Headley leaves with strained right calf

WASHINGTON (AP) — San Diego third baseman Chase Headley has left the Padres' game against the Washington Nationals in the middle of the second inning with a strained right calf.

Headley flied out to center in the top of the second Thursday night, then did not take his spot in the field in the bottom half.

Alexi Amarista replaced Headley at third base and in the fifth spot in the batting order.


Ben Martin surges to Zurich Classic lead

AVONDALE, La. (AP) — A few weeks ago, Ben Martin had missed seven of eight cuts and figured he'd better make some changes.

He started by meeting with his sports psychologist and hiring an old buddy from Clemson as his new caddie.

The results have been pretty good so far.

On Thursday, Martin treated a tiny late-afternoon gallery to a course-record round, shooting a 10-under 62 in the first round of the Zurich Classic.


Youngstown State to interview Tressel for top job

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel is among six candidates being interviewed for the president's job at Youngstown State University, where he used to coach.

Tressel also is one of three finalists for the top job at the University of Akron, where he has been an administrator for two years. He took a job at Akron after being forced out at Ohio State following a scandal in which his players sold memorabilia for cash and tattoos.
