BALTIMORE (AP) — Orioles right-hander Miguel Gonzalez has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, a move that has nothing to do with his performance in Baltimore.

Gonzalez pitched eight strong innings Friday night against the New York Yankees. But he won't be needed again until well after the All-Star break, so the Orioles sent him to the minors and recalled catcher Steve Clevenger from Norfolk.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — With the All-Star game coming to the Twin Cities, the Minnesota Twins see the mid-summer party as more than a way to distract from another disappointing season.

In some ways, it's a referendum on the success of outdoor baseball in the chilly north country and the first chance 5-year-old Target Field has had to take center stage.

The Twins' new urban jewel of a ballpark opened in 2010 but has hosted only one postseason series. So team officials are looking forward to putting the ballpark — and yes, the weather — on display.

The links course looked the same — except for the color of the grass.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — No European team has ever won a World Cup played in the Americas. Just one more source of motivation for Germany ahead of Sunday's final against Argentina.

"We know we can write history," Germany coach Joachim Loew said. "South Americans have always dominated on their continent and this is an extra incentive for us."
