PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ike Davis wasn't able to play meaningful late-season games during his time with the New York Mets. He's making the most of his chance with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"It's the first time he's been involved in games that have this kind of significance this late in the season," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Wednesday after Davis' long home run keyed a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. "He's showing up to the ballpark ready contribute any way he can."

Kenseth likes title chances despite lack of wins

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Matt Kenseth was a five-time winner this time last year and an established championship threat. He doesn't feel any less confident about his title chances this season even though he has not visited Victory Lane.

Kenseth goes into Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend winless, but ranked a solid fifth in the Sprint Cup standings. With just two races remaining to set the 16-driver Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field, Kenseth should make it in on points and doesn't feel like he needs to go for broke to get a win in the next two weeks.

K-State picks Jones as starting running back

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — The three running backs who returned for No. 20 Kansas State this season had run for fewer than 50 yards, so to say the competition was wide open this offseason would be an understatement.

When things shook out, Charles Jones had risen to the head of the depth chart.

Jones wound up beating Jarvis Leverett Jr. and DeMarcus Robinson for the starting nod, and incoming freshman Dalvin Warmack was unable to break through during fall camp.
