***Update*** I-70 reopens in both directions after being closed for 5 hours near Ohio 37 exits in Licking County due to several accidents.

An accident has closed a portion of I-70 in our area. 

According to the Granville Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol I-70 is closed near the Lancaster exit on both the east and westbound lanes.

Trooper Ferguson reports that several people are sliding off of the roadway and several accidents have been reported.

With the rise in accidents this time of year, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is urging drivers to pay attention and slow down.

Lieutenant Matt Boyd of the Zanesville Post, says traveling at an unsafe speed while the roads are bad is the number one cause of accidents during the winter months.

"Just because the speed limit is 70 MPH on the interstate certainly doesn't mean it's safe to drive 70 MPH when the road are like they have been," Lt. Boyd explained....

Highway Patrol Lieutenant Matt Boyd says this time last year, there were 969 confirmed traffic fatalities in Ohio. That number has dipped down to 823 so far in 2013. Lt. Boyd attributes the decrease to a number of things including educating young and older drivers, who make up the majority of traffic accidents, and an increased presence of troopers on the roadways.

Hunting season starts Saturday and that means drivers need to pay close attention to the roadways for deer.

AAA Spokeswoman Kimberly Schwind said there were about 21,000 collisions with deer in Ohio in 2012 alone, with 5,000 of those accidents happening in November. And there are three main reasons for the increase.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, summertime and summer holiday's are the peak season for accidents, speeding and drunk driving. This Labor Day weekend, drivers will see an increased presence of troopers.

Area law enforcement agencies had their hands full Thursday after heavy rains played a role in a rash of accidents in the Zanesville area. The Highway Patrol says one of the biggest involved 5 vehicles near the Underwood Street exit of I-70 and was actually three different accidents. The Granville Post of the State Highway Patrol says westbound I-70 traffic is slowed Wednesday afternoon after two separate Semi/Car Accidents.  It happened near Kirkersville close to State Route 158.  A dispatcher with the Highway Patrol says there were no serious injuries in either accident.

Hazardous materials are shipped on the country's highway system every day and on a moments notice, an accident could occur.

There have been multiple accidents along Interstate 70 over the past few months that have completely shut down the heavily traveled roadway.

ODOT says it has been looking into what may be causing the crashes, and so far, the staff hasn't reached a conclusion.

It's the leading cause of death among kids...accidents on the roadway. But the AAA Auto Club says parents can help prevent this from happening just by taking a few simple safety precautions.
