The Animal Shelter wants everyone to be able to shout out "Bingo."

The MASS Bingo Hall on West Main Street reopened to the public in March. Since that time the Animal Shelter Society's been working to reinvent the facility connecting it more to the shelter.

One hundred percent of the proceeds stay in the county to help the shelter keep the costs of adoption and wellness clinics low and allow the shelter to continue to provide other services to the community.

With changing technology and newly opened casinos in the state, the MASS Bingo Hall on W. Main Street has been temporarily closed since December. President of the Board of Directors for the Animal Shelter Society, Stephanie Hill, says the board decided to shut down bingo to evaluate how they could do things differently. Hill calls the closing a "transition period."

The Animal Shelter Society of Muskingum County will improve animal based programs through funds raised at their annual auction.

The organization raised more than $21,000 at this year's auction that took place a few weeks ago, Executive Director, Jody Murray says that he was pleased with the event.

There are some animals at the shelter in Muskingum County that have longer stays than others.

It's been more than a year since Ohio stopped labeling pit bulls as vicious. Now the animals aren't automatically stamped with the label without proof of that characterization. Unfortunately, for the animal perceptions about them can keep it behind shelter cages for a longer time than other pets.

One local organization is urging residents this winter to watch out for their pets.

With colder temperatures and the reality of winter setting in, pet owners need to pay special attention to their animals when they are outside.

"They need to be kept warm, in a dry place, so if they are outside, they need to have proper enclosure, you know a good dog box, something like that, a garage, whatever," says Executive Director of the Animal Shelter Society Larry Hostetler
