Some local high school students are being recognized for their accomplishments in the sport of archery.

Cody Bush, who took first place in the World Archery Tournament and his twin brother Colt Bush, who took 20th place, were both presented an honorary certificate of achievement by the Muskingum County Commissioners Wednesday afternoon.

"It makes you feel really good. It's pretty cool to shoot and be number one is even better," said Cody.

Archery is taking center stage at the Muskingum Valley Outdoor Show.

An invitational tournament was held by the National Archery in the Schools Program. Students from various local high schools traveled to the Longaberger Homestead to compete in the day long event.

In less than two weeks, hunters will come face-to-face with Ohio's increasing deer population.

Around 300,000 bowhunters are expected to take part in the archery deer hunting season, which opens September 25th. More than 90,000 deer were killed by bowhunters last year, which was a 7% increase. Licking County was the state leader, followed by Coshocton, Tuscarawas, Harrison, and Guernsey counties.

The archery deer hunting season will last five months, through February 6th.

Maysville students are taking aim for a national competition.

Proud parents and members of the community stopped by Maysville High School Sunday afternoon for a spaghetti dinner fundraiser to help send the Maysville archery team to nationals in Louisville, Kentucky. Coach, Chris Skinner, says the team is made up of an impressive crop of students.

"I think these kids are self motivated, I don't think anybody in the state or even anybody in the country...

Maysville High School is the winner of the 2010 National Archery in the Schools Program State Tournament. This is the fourth year in a row the local school has received this honor.

The event took place last Friday with more than one thousand students participating. Maysville Middle School student Tyler Finley was named the overall top male archer and Morgan High School student Kelsey Taylor got this year's Spirit Award.
