Children were outside and finding ways to beat the heat on Monday at the Muskingum Family YMCA pool.

The pool can have as many as 200 to 300 people throughout its gates when temperatures reach the 80 to 90 degree mark. Lifeguards say that to ensure the safety of children they take extra precautions.

The unbearable heat continues to keep staff members of the Muskingum Family Y busy.

The pool on Adams Lane was not as busy as it has been in days past, but that didn't stop dozens of area children from enjoying a dip and a swim.

Lifeguards say there is never a day where it's too hot to jump in and relax.

Those looking for a break from the heat and humidity had many options available to stay cool.

Tom's Ice Cream Bowl, a staple in the Zanesville community, was filled nearly to capacity Tuesday afternoon with patrons enjoying their favorite cold treats.

Customers old and young took a load off while they enjoyed everything from hot fudge sundaes to sorbets and even classic cones.

"Hazy, hot and humid" will be the phrase to describe the weather for the next couple of days, and health officials at the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department are urging people to keep cool.

Medical Director, Dr. Vicki Whitacre said children and the elderly are the most at risk for heat-related ailments.

Despite the recent unseasonably warm weather, Wednesday marks the official first day of Summer.

We found around 100 area kids Monday at the Muskingum Family "Y" pool on Adams Lane who were busy swimming, playing and trying to find some relief from the hot weather.

The Muskingum Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is urging the public to be prepared for the summer heat.

With temperatures expected to be in the 90s this week, the agency is reminding people to take extra precautions to avoid falling victim to the heat and humidity.

With a heat index well into the upper 90's it didn't stop some local residents trying to beat the heat.

The heat was motivation for many families to come splash around at Lake Isabella in East Fultonham, but for others it may have been the opposite. Board of Trustees President Allen Reed said although the lake seemed full it was not nearly the crowd he would expect in this type of weather.
