The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says more than 250 thousand deer were killed this hunting season, which is up from last year by about 10 thousand.

Coshocton County ranks number one on the list, with a little less than 10 thousand deer killed. Tuscarawas is in second place, Licking in third, Guernsey in fourth, and Harrison in fifth.

Muskingum county places sixth with about 78 hundred deer killed.

During the cold, winter months, weather can easily cause accidents around Southeastern Ohio, but so can another culprit--deer.

Sgt. Clark Felix of the Zanesville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said each year the post handles between 400 and 500 deer versus car accidents alone.

Muzzleloader deer hunting season begins this Saturday.

Licensed hunters may hunt deer and small game from a half hour before sunrise til sunset. So far, Ohioans have killed 228,000 deer this hunting season. That is 9,000 more than last year.

"If the trend continues we will see more than were taken last year, a total of roughly 21 thousand were taken during the muzzle loader season last year," says Ryan Fink, the Ag Specialist for Muskingum Soil and Water.

More people are running into deer on the roadways.

The Zanesville Post of the State Highway Patrol says troopers have been busy handling an increase in deer-car collisions. It handles anywhere from one to 15 incidents daily.

Deer gun season started off with a bang today.

Hunters from all across the United States travel to Southeastern Ohio just for deer hunting season.

Owner of the Dillon Falls Store and deer check station Kathy McCann says today got off to a slow start, but expects it to pick up.

"Bow season we were busier this year than last year and I expect gun season will be the same way," McCann said.

Two people are MedFlighted to Grant Medical Center in Columbus after a one vehicle accident.

It happened around 3 p.m. on State Route 93 near Crooksville.

The Lancaster Post of the State Highway Patrol says Paul Haas, of Heath, was traveling on his motorcycle when he hit a deer.

Troopers say Haas and his passenger were injured and needed medical attention but the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

 A new ordinance in the city of Newark is proposing to allow bow hunting of deer with in the city limits.

Don Ellington, a Fifth Ward Councilman, says Newark has a serious deer problem and efforts through non-lethal means have not worked. The new ordinance would be similar to Granville's urban deer hunting program and require hunters to obtain an additional license.
