It's no secret that prescription drug abuse plagues many youth throughout the country, but it's now becoming a problem for many senior citizens as well.

Hundreds of thousands of seniors misuse painkillers and prescription drugs, and many are even becoming addicted.  Steve Carrel of Muskingum Behavioral Health said the problem is also on the rise right here in the Zanesville area and that the vast majority of drugs taken in on medication take back day come from area seniors.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine visited Zanesville as part of a state initiative to prevent addiction and reduce drug abuse in all 88 counties.

"It's very serious,” said President of National Alliance on Mental Illness, Tom Quinn. “But I don't know what to do about it. Drugs are so powerful, that I don't know what you can do about it.”

In a four year period, from 2007 to 2011, the state reports there has been a significant increase in drug overdose deaths...

The Ohio Attorney General made a stop in Zanesville Friday afternoon, to discuss drug related crimes and addictions within the community.

Mike DeWine is making a series of visits to several cities and counties over the next few months for community forums where concerned residents and local law enforcement can address the problem and how to prevent drug use and abuse.

Ohio's New Attorney General is taking a tough stance against the abuse of prescription medication.

Mike Dewine is planning to work with local law enforcement agencies and the state medical board to prevent prescription drug abuse. It's currently the leading cause of accidental death here in Ohio. Dewine is introducing the proposal after house lawmakers passed legislation to limit doctors ability to disperse controlled substances like painkillers.
