A local tree expert wants you to be on the lookout for an insect that poses a serious threat to trees.

Last month the Ohio Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of the Emerald Ash Borer in Muskingum County

Bryan Smith of McCullough's Tree Service said one of the most beneficial things you can do to protect trees from the Ash Borer is to determine what kind of trees are in your backyard.

An insect that poses a serious threat to trees has made its way into our area.

On Friday the Ohio Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of emerald ash borer in Muskingum County. Mark Ochs of Ochs Tree Service said the pest belongs to a group of metallic wood-boring beetles.

"It eventually kills the tree," said Ochs.  "It invades it, weakens it, feeds off of it and lays eggs that feed off of it.  The tree is not cured, so it gets overwhelmed....

Every county in Ohio is now under emerald ash borer quarantine.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture made the announcement Wednesday, citing the confirmations of the emerald ash borer in Wayne National Forest and infestations in surrounding states as part of its reasoning for the statewide quarantine.

The United State's Department of Agriculture is expanding its Emerald Ash Borer quarantine to include Perry County.

The Ash Borer was located in an Ash Tree near State Route 668 at Township Road 133 within Wayne National Forest.

This is the counties first known infestation.
