A celebration was held today at the Zanesville Civic League Community Center.

Juneteenth educates people about the abolishment of slavery. It also provides an opportunity to get together for a good time.

"Juneteenth is actually one of the oldest known celebrations for the African American people and this is our 12th annual we started in 1998," says Stacey Duling, chairperson for the event.

The threat of rain may have brought activities inside Zanesville Community High School, but it didn't keep people away from the "Rock the Block" event.

School teacher Kathie Dannemann says the students wanted to give something back to the community that the young and old would enjoy.

"We found that math, science, English, and social studies, that's all important. You get your diploma, but we also need service learning, " says Dannemann.
