Highway Patrol Lieutenant Matt Boyd says this time last year, there were 969 confirmed traffic fatalities in Ohio. That number has dipped down to 823 so far in 2013. Lt. Boyd attributes the decrease to a number of things including educating young and older drivers, who make up the majority of traffic accidents, and an increased presence of troopers on the roadways.

An increased effort by Ohio Troopers to stop drunken driving may contribute to the nearly 9% drop in fatal accidents so far this year.

The State Highway Patrol released numbers Thursday indicating 824 people have been killed on Ohio roads through October. That's down 902 fatalities during the same time last year.

10 people are dead after five fatal crashes in Muskingum County since the start of this year.

The first happened in early March, when 13-year-old Alison Clark was killed on Raiders Road. It was followed by two missing Licking County men who were found dead in their car after it went into the Muskingum River.
