Firefighters at the Zanesville Fire Department are training to handle Hazmat situations.

Approximately 45 firefighters will train for forty hours to become Hazmat technicians. Once trained, there will be a 24-hour refresher course every other year. The training comes from Columbus State Community College. Fire Science Technician Jay Louks says Hazmat training could come into play in several situations, including fires.

Officials in Muskingum County are making sure they're prepared in the event that an emergency strikes.

Thursday the Local Emergency Preparedness Committee gathered for their quarterly meeting. Guest Speaker Sheriff Matt Lutz spoke on the handling of a recent emergency. In October 56 wild, exotic animals were released from a farm on Kopchak Road, law enforcement responded to the scene where they were forced to kill 48 of those animals. Hazardous materials are shipped on the country's highway system every day and on a moments notice, an accident could occur.

The Muskingum County Emergency Management Agency in conjunction with the Ohio Homeland Security Region 8 Hazmat will hold a multi-county table top exercise on Saturday to plant in the event of a disaster. Muskingum, Noble, Belmont, and Jefferson Counties will be participating.

Local crews will be responding to a truck accident Thursday morning that will involve the leaking of hazardous chemicals, but it's a scheduled simulation that's part of a statewide 16 county full-scale disaster drill.
