The city of Zanesville has plans to ban panhandling.

Those needing shelter in this frigid weather can seek help at the Salvation Army.

With dangerously cold temperatures in the forecast, shelter manager, Karen Walker, says there are spots available at the Salvation Army's Putnam Avenue location.

The Salvation Army in Zanesville serves Muskingum, Morgan and Perry County residents for usually up to 90 days if they have nowhere to go, but with the bitter cold temperatures in the forecast, they're extending that time period.

The number of homeless people in Muskingum County is on the rise. On January 24th the Muskingum County Continuum of Care held a Point-in-Time homeless count. Homeless count volunteer and Zanesville Attorney Patrick Skillter says there were 25 unsheltered homeless people in the County and 42 people living in homeless shelters and transitional housing, for a total of 67 homeless people in Muskingum County. A local group sees a slight rise in the number of unsheltered homeless living in our area during their homeless count.

This year the Muskingum County Continuum of Care interviewed eight unsheltered individuals, observed eight more and came across fifteen sites where people were thought to be living. It's up from the 19 of last year's count.

A homeless count is planned in Muskingum County on Tuesday. The Muskingum County Continuum of Care is teaming up with the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio to take the survey. Area residents are bundled up walking the streets of Zanesville to count the homeless.
