As many prepare to put together their taxes for this season there's some things to keep in mind.

A spokesperson for the Internal Revenue Service said that besides miscalculation mistakes on forms the other mistake people often make is not taking advantage of deductions and tax credits.

One is the Earned Income Tax Credit which can save someone up to $6,000.

Filing's under way for this year's tax season.

An Internal Revenue Service spokesperson said that filing for tax season began January 31 and will end on April 15. Those making above $10,000 must file a return.

When filing the IRS said it's helpful to keep documents such as receipts for income, expenses and child care organized. Using tax prep software can also take some of the headaches away.

An estimated 25-30 percent of Ohioans will wait until the final two weeks to file taxes.

If you're one of those waiting until the last moment to submit your 2012 return you can file an extension. The catch is you will still have to pay if you owe and will get a late filing penalty.

If you filed your tax return early you may see a delay in receiving your refund check.

The IRS is holding refund checks on tax returns filed before Wednesday because of a computer glitch affecting a new fraud detection and prevention system.
Susan Elliot from the Jackson Hewitt Tax Service has been getting calls all day from concerned citizens, and said a delay in sending out the checks is actually a security precaution.

The deadline for filing your taxes with the IRS is Monday at midnight.

The last collection for mail in Zanesville was at 6 p.m. Postmaster Steve Williams said they stopped extending their hours on Tax Day several years ago.

"Now 72% of all Americans are doing their taxes online, it's really a non-event for us the windows not as heavy and the letter mail quite frankly is not as much as use to be," he said.
