While checking out the livestock barns is always a popular activity at the fairgrounds there's some interesting things inside the buildings.
The Junior Fair Building houses over 200 4H projects that range from scrapbooking, to cooking to sewing.
"Those projects are really important because they give the youth that maybe live in the city or don't live on a farm or don't have a place to keep an animal to be involved in learning about their interests as well and gaining those...
It's a busy day for the 4H members in the sheep barn as the Junior Fair Sheep Show took place Tuesday morning.
4H members prepped for the show by washing down their animals and doing some last minute grooming. Laila Richards showed sheep for the first time at the Muskingum County Fair. She said she wanted to show sheep just to try it out. She took home a blue ribbon for first place. Previously she showed horses.
"A horse you have to take out in a ring and ride, but sheep you...
Fairgoers usually visit the fairgrounds hungry, but many people don't think about food safety.
The Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department inspects every food stand at the fair. Public Health Sanitarian Ed Shaffer said the frequency of the inspections depends on the size of the facility and the risk factors of the food being served.
"Throughout the fair, we inspect the 70 or so food stands that are set up throughout the fairgrounds just to make sure that the food...
It was a rainy start for the Muskingum County Fair but all the more fitting for their unusual grand-opening.
The Muskingum County Fairgrounds were set to open with its 165th Annual Blue Ribbon Cutting earlier this evening when Fair Board President Darrel Cubbison decided it would be more fitting to honor Soil and Water Retiree Dick Sorg.
"We have a recipe it takes soil, it takes water, and then it takes one more ingredient -kids," said Cubbison. "So we're...
Preparations are underway for the 165th annual Muskingum County Fair.
President of the Fair Board Darrel Cubbison has deep roots in these fairgrounds - he started showing chickens at age 7. Cubbison said it's amazing to see the set-up unfold.
"We can set up the things we have on hand now, and then we have some concessionaires come in from other fairs, and you won't believe what happens Saturday night for us to be ready to go by Sunday morning," said Cubbison.
The countdown to the Muskingum County Fair is underway. It's just 172 days until fried food, 4H projects and rides.
Wednesday a big announcement came that country music star Rodney Atkins will be the featured entertainment. He's charted seven Top 20 singles with songs like, "Watching You," "It's America" and "Farmer's Daughter". For the fair board there was some pressure to top last year's group, Lady Antebellum.
The hustle and bustle around the Muskingum County Fairgrounds is now reduced to an empty lot. The 164th blue ribbon fair wrapped up last night.
The Fair Board says pretty soon, you won't even recognize that the week-long event was even there.
"It takes about two days to get it cleaned up, and then of course we have a lot of trailers moving and getting the things out of the buildings, it keeps us busy," says Bill Again, V.P. of the Fair Board.
