The budget for Muskingum County has been finalized for 2011.

County Commissioner Jerry Lavy said they had to make cuts based on revenue generated from last year and this year.

"We worked as diligently as we could to get it down to where we needed to be because you obviously can't spend more than what you bring in because we're mandated by law to have a balanced budget," said Lavy.

Detentions, suspensions, and boot camp? Muskingum County Schools are now offering parents an alternative form of discipline for their children. 

"We call it diversion weekend because we want to divert them from the activities that got them into trouble in the first place," said Co-director Steve Kish.

The Muskingum County Emergency Management Agency acts as a watchdog that is prepared to assist during weather storms.

Muskingum County Commissioners are seeking financial support for several area projects.

Kent Moore, a field representative for U.S. Senator Rob Portman stopped by the commissioner's office on Thursday afternoon to introduce himself and to also discuss any concerns the officials may be dealing with.

The recycling program in Muskingum County is showing a promising future despite the struggling economy.

The Muskingum County Library System is boasting a good return on investment.

For every dollar coming into the library for 2010 through a levy and state funding, it returned $5.69 in services, resources, and programs.

Muskingum County is currently battling a shrinking budget.

Last month it was discovered that around 2.2 million dollars in county money has been sitting in a non-interest bearing checking account since July of 2010. Ohio's New Attorney General is taking a tough stance against the abuse of prescription medication.

Mike Dewine is planning to work with local law enforcement agencies and the state medical board to prevent prescription drug abuse. It's currently the leading cause of accidental death here in Ohio. Dewine is introducing the proposal after house lawmakers passed legislation to limit doctors ability to disperse controlled substances like painkillers.

Muskingum County Auditor Debra Nye is reminding dog owners that Monday is the last day to get your pets license.

She says after Monday there will be a penalty and the cost of dog tags will go up from $10.00 to $20.00.
