It has been a busy year for the Muskingum Valley Red Cross when it comes to fires. This weekend alone there were three including a small apartment complex in Cambridge.

Executive Director Marlene Henderson says there have been 62 fires since July; 10 in march alone. Last year there were 65 fires for the year. This increase has left the Red Cross in need of additional funding and donations.

The Muskingum Valley Red Cross hopes to be in their new home by September.

The organization is kicking off their capital campaign to raise the last funds renovate and move to their new chapter house in Norwich. The need for a building became great after the addition of Guernsey and Noble counties to their coverage area.

A major blood drive planned for Thursday will go on as planned for now.

The Muskingum Valley Red Cross said the only way the blood drive at Secrest will be canceled is if we reach a level three snow emergency.

The drive comes at a critical point in the year.

"This time of year we see an increase in the need. With every donation you have the ability to save three lives," said Support Specialist Susan Hoskinson.

A family's home is damaged by fire late Sunday night.

The Muskingum Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross said they were called to assist Karen Emanuel at her home at 2556 Bell Street in Zanesville. The fire was reported around 11p.m.

The Red Cross is assisting her family by providing food, clothing and temporary shelter.

No details on the fire are known at this time. We'll bring you more as it becomes available.

The Zanesville Fire Department says it’s investigating a Thursday evening fire.  It happened just before 8 p.m. at 12-10 Moxahala Avenue.  Deputy Fire Chief Eric Waltemire says it apparently started in the kitchen of the duplex and caused about 40-thousand dollars in damage. Soon kids around our area will be out to collect Halloween treats.

With small children out and about the Muskingum Valley Chapter of the Red Cross asks that adults and children take precautions to ensure a safe trick or treat for everyone.

Trick or Treat safety includes making sure kids are accompanied by an adult, only visit homes with porch lights on and look both ways before crossing the street.

The death toll mounts as Hurricane Sandy hits the Bahamas, Caribbean and Jamaica.

The storm has knocked out power, flooded roads and downed trees. It's also put the Red Cross on alert.

The organization has opened shelters in the wake of the hurricane. It's also affecting our local Red Cross, who's on stand-by for deployment.

Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to hit Florida soon as a hurricane and the National Red Cross is preparing to respond if needed.

A farm animal helped raise money for a local charity.

North Valley Bank on Maysville Pike held its first Kiss the Pig contest and Friday the votes were tallied and one lucky employee was chosen to kiss the baby pig.
