A leak in a downtown Zanesville canal could have had major consequences.

Monday during a routine check of the canal by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources they found the canal was leaking into the river in two places. The areas being looked at are near the Y-bridge. Emergency Management Director Bo Keck said it's similar to a breach in a dam.

"It would basically erode out the ground around the opening and take the canal out of the picture and just erode it clear out,...

Progess continues on the draining of an area lake.

The lake owned by American Electric Power near State Route 313 and Yorker Road is down three feet from where it was Tuesday when they started the process. So far, the weekend rain is the only hic-up in the project.

"Friday night there was that decision to stop the controlled release so we didn't have any flooding downstream whatsoever," said Bo Keck Muskingum County's Emergency Management Director. "If we had...

Residents of Zanesville shouldn't be concerned about an abundance of dead fish in the canal along the Muskingum River.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Fish Management Supervisor of District 4 Tim Parrett said it's normal.

Parrett explains that the fish called Gizzard Shads are fragile and usually die off due to winter's harsh conditions. He says ODNR officials have checked the canal and there's no sign of it being anything more than that and they've even seen Gizzard...

The deer population is increasing across the state of Ohio.

While that means good news for hunters, it's causing some problems at some of the state's nature preserves. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Natural Areas and Preserves says one such negative impact is that the state's wildflower, the large flowered trillium, can no longer be found at some of these sites because the areas are being over-browsed for deer.

So, it's planning to hold special archery deer...

With the nice weather Saturday, you may be thinking about taking your boat out on the water.

With the high water levels from rain and melted snow there are a few hazards you need to be aware of.

"There is going to be a lot of current, it is going to be swift and that is the most underestimated hazard out there.  People don't realize the strength and what not. Make sure you tell someone where you are going boating and when you will be back and in case you don't...
