A Zanesville man has been charged with driving under the influence in a Saturday crash that knocked out power on Sonora Road.

The Zanesville Post of the State Highway Patrol says 55-year-old Larry Dobbins of Zanesville has been charged with failure to control his vehicle and operating his vehicle while under the influence.Dobbins drove off Sonora Road, hitting two mailboxes and a utility pole. A Zanesville man is dead following an early morning accident.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at around 9:35 a.m., Joseph K. Ross of Zanesville, was driving westbound on US 40 when he drove off the right side of the roadway and struck two mailboxes. His vehicle continued through a yard and vaulted off a concrete bridge and struck a concrete wall. OSHP said the vehicle came to a rest in a water filled creek. Ross was not wearing a seatbelt.

The number of traffic fatalities in the state hit a record low for 2013, but the State Highway Patrol reports that there were three fatalities to start off the new year.

Two of the fatal crashes happened in Adams and Fayette counties, while the third occurred in Holmes County. According to the OSHP, none of the people killed were wearing a seatbelt. With the rise in accidents this time of year, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is urging drivers to pay attention and slow down.

Lieutenant Matt Boyd of the Zanesville Post, says traveling at an unsafe speed while the roads are bad is the number one cause of accidents during the winter months.

"Just because the speed limit is 70 MPH on the interstate certainly doesn't mean it's safe to drive 70 MPH when the road are like they have been," Lt. Boyd explained....

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, summertime and summer holiday's are the peak season for accidents, speeding and drunk driving. This Labor Day weekend, drivers will see an increased presence of troopers.

Community Ambulance, Newton Township and the South Zanesville Fire Department responded to the scene of an accident just after 10 a.m. on Friday. The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene of the accident  just before 2 O'clock on Friday at the intersection of US 40 and Interstate 70.

The accident happened  just after 4 p.m. Monday afternoon between Samara and Lovers Lane in Washington Township. Lt. Matt Boyd of the Ohio State Highway Patrol says three motorcycles were heading back to Cleveland after sight seeing in Muskingum and Morgan Counties. The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene just before 10 a.m. on SR 22 and Township Road 49 near Fultonham on Thursday.
