The Kiwanis Club of Zanesville is preparing for its 4th Annual Corporate Pinewood Derby.

About 25 local businesses will be sponsoring 25 pinewood derby cars at this Thursday's event. Kevin Pinson, derby chairman for the Kiwanis Club, says the club got the idea for the event from local cub scout packs a few years ago. Each business will be given a car kit and can choose to either build the car themselves or have it built by starlight industries.

Adults and local businesses got together and raced 20 derby cars for the Kiwanis Club of Zanesville's 2nd Annual Pinewood Derby. The event was held at the Knights of Columbus-Sunrise Center and was sponsored by the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home.

A local Cub Scouts participated in a pinewood derby race at North Terrace Church in Zanesville Saturday afternoon. About 55 cub scouts from Muskingum, Perry and Morgan Counties raced their pinewood derby cars.

The Kiwanis Club of Zanesville will be hosting a Pinewood Derby next month. The third annual derby is sponsored by Bolin-Dierkis Funeral Home and will be held at The Knights of Columbus Sunrise Center on April 14.

One of the premiere events for the Cub Scouts pack 121 from Dresden is the annual Pinewood Derby.

Today was the 42nd annual event where the scouts, grades first through fifth race their hand crafted car, each child is given a kit to build their vehicle including a block of wood, wheels and axles.

Local boy scouts were off the races Sunday afternoon.

Fifteen boy scouts from pack 121 out of Dresden, raced their homemade cars in the 40th Annual Pinewood Derby.

"They start with a block of wood with wheels and nails and they carve it and shape it and build it within a set of specs for length width, etc," explains Dan Riley, the Pack Committee Chairman.

Each race car must be 2 3/4 inches by 7 inches and not weigh over 5 ounces to compete...
