The 49th Annual Crooksville-Roseville Pottery Festival began Thursday.

The event began at the Ohio Ceramic Museum with a plate breaking ceremony at noon today and was followed by the grounds opening at Crooksville Village Park. Local ceramists came out to the Zanesville Museum of Art to teach a free Raku pottery lesson to visitors on Saturday.

The Raku technique for creating pottery originated during the 15th century by the Raku family in Japan who wanted to speed up the firing process.

Pottery lovers gathered Sunday at an annual convention for a local pottery company.

Sunday was the 28th annual McCoy Pottery Collector's Convention. This year's theme was McCoy's Yellow Palette, but at the auction today there were pieces of all colors, decades and sizes. The McCoy pieces that are mainly collected by the group are from 1910 through the late 1980's.

The opening celebration started off with the pledge of allegiance and then the always anticipated plate breaking and introduction of the 2013 Pottery Queen.

Beginning pottery enthusiast throughout the nation will come to Zanesville.

The annual pottery week celebration serves as a reunion for collectors of pottery. The 10 days of festivities will include sales, auctions, trades and events. The Zanesville Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce's Lori Kappes said, more than 500 people will attend.

For the next 10 days, pottery is going to be all the rage in Muskingum County, and people are traveling from all over the country to get their hands on these historic pieces of art.

Staff from Zanesville Pottery, which is located just off US 40, say they're thrilled with the turnout.

"It's been a little better this year, although this is the first day. People come out during the week so it seems to pick up as we go, " says Kim Castor of Zanesville Pottery.
