After the housing slump started a few years ago, real estate activity in downtown Zanesville is beginning to pick up again.

"In the mid-2000's things were going pretty strong and then 2008-2009 things slowed down again. I'm very excited to say that there's real estate available in the downtown area both large and small, commercial and residential," said Dana Matz, Manager of the Downtown Zanesville Association.

Realtor's in Muskingum County are seeing a rise in interested buyers, but there just aren't many properties to show them. The housing market is heating up and agents are looking for homes to sell.

The latest home sales numbers are out and statewide things are not looking so good.

The Ohio Association of Realtors say that July home sales are down 35% from June. Zanesville Real Estate Agent Jay Butler talks about sales in this region.

"Muskingum County is only down however, 1.3%, a year ago, July, three counties: Muskingum, Morgan and Perry County, there's a collective of 76 homes sold," said Jay Butler.

A company out of Dayton will soon begin performing a mandatory real estate assessment.

It is required by law that a county reassess its real estate every six years. The Muskingum County Commissioners heard bids from three companies and Thursday the Muskingum County Auditor, Anita Adams, selected Tyler/CLT.

The deadline to buy a home and take advantage of the First Time Homebuyers Tax Credit is looming, but there are a few other reasons why now is the time to buy.

Realtor Shannon Adams of Y-City Realty said the deadline to buy a home is April 30 and it must be closed on by June 30.
