Five local charities received checks from the proceeds of this year's souper bowl event. The five beneficiaries are: Eastside Community Ministry, Muskingum County Center for Seniors, The Salvation Army, Fellowship of Christ's Community and Christ's Table.

The annual event in October raised almost fifteen hundred dollars for the five charities. Divided by five, each organization received almost three thousand dollars and those funds can go a long way.

The Salvation Army is making a plea for baked pies.  The Zanesville organization is hosting its annual Thanksgiving dinner at 4 p.m. Wednesday (Today) and needs the desert with whipped cream.  If you would like to make a donation of pies to the Zanesville Salvation Army you can by calling -- 452-8350.  You can also drop off the pies at 515 Putnam Avenue.

Tables at the Muskingum County Center for Seniors were filled with people supporting Christ's Table, Eastside Community Ministry, Salvation Army, Fellowship of Christ, and the Senior Center, for the 16th annual Souper Bowl.

Auditions for an annual holiday show are underway in downtown Zanesville.

It was day one of auditions for the "Angel Tree" benefit show at The Renner on Seventh Street.

It'll be a warm winter for children around the area thanks to a local organization.

The Salvation Army is preparing for their coats for kids giveaway. Donated coats are being cleaned and sorted as the event nears.

The Salvation Army is helping kids go back to school in style.

Today the organization held a children's clothing giveaway.  Office Coordinator Mindy McCloy said volunteers sort through the donations to put the best items on the tables.

"It took three days to prepare, so we had a huge amount of volunteers that came in to help set up, and now they're here helping the families go through the clothing room and helping them check in and check out," said McCloy.

Temperatures around our area prepare to soar during a summertime heat wave.

Over the next four days temperatures are set to move into the 90's. One local organization is trying to help those suffering the heats affects by giving them a temporary place to cool down.

"We're going to be providing water in our entryway that individuals can come in and have a glass of cold water and just sit down for a moment and get out of the heat," said Shelter Manager Karen Shelter.

The Salvation Army in Zanesville is celebrating a record year of its Red Kettle Campaign.

Major Ralph Campbell said the campaign netted about $7,000 this year, and another $7,000 was received through the mail.  Although walk-in donations saw a significant decrease, Campbell said the record-breaking Red Kettle Campaign and mail-in donations made up for it.

A warm home is something many of us take for granted.

Every winter the Salvation Army's homeless shelter in Zanesville is packed with people trying to escape from the cold weather.  Case Manager Karen Walker said the shelter has 35 beds for men, women and families seeking a temporary place to live.  She said the ultimate goal is to help people get back on track, and the shelter has a high success rate of placing people in permanent homes and jobs.

Charitable organizations receive extra help during the holiday season, but donations are needed throughout the year.
