Officials will reopen a Licking County animal shelter Monday that closed after a litter of puppies contracted a contagious viral disease and died.  The Licking County Humane Society closed to the public in early March to quarantine and clean the facility if Heath to rid it of any traces of parvovirus.  It says no more animals showed symptoms or tested positive for the virus since the intial outbreak. Those needing shelter in this frigid weather can seek help at the Salvation Army.

With dangerously cold temperatures in the forecast, shelter manager, Karen Walker, says there are spots available at the Salvation Army's Putnam Avenue location.

The Salvation Army in Zanesville serves Muskingum, Morgan and Perry County residents for usually up to 90 days if they have nowhere to go, but with the bitter cold temperatures in the forecast, they're extending that time period.

The Salvation Army emergency shelter made Christmas a little more special for several individuals. 

The emergency shelter at The Salvation Army welcomed around 16 individuals through their doors on Christmas.  Shelter Manager Karen Walker says there has been an average amount of people coming in and out of the shelter over the holidays, but soon, they will see an increase in numbers.

The Animal Shelter Society of Zanesville has received a grant to help vaccinate dogs for canine influenza virus.

The highly contagious disease can spread easily from dog to dog, especially in close proximity. The shelter received the grant from a petfinder.com foundation program to build community immunity against the respiratory infection, which has become a growing problem through the U.S. It has been confirmed in 34 states so far. The bitterly cold temperatures are making it hard for the homeless but a local emergency shelter is offering a warm place to stay.

It's been a busy month for the Salvation Army in Zanesville.

There's been a significant increase in the number of people staying at the shelter, including more first-timers and families. The staff say they believe the cold weather and the economy are the main contributing factors.

The Salvation Army's shelter in Zanesville is at capacity.

Staff say the numbers of people coming through their doors have really gone up because of the heat.

"We have 35 beds, but we can go to an overflow of 50. If we have to, we will open up the gym or the recreation room and put some cots in there. (We'll) do what we have to do, " says Captain Ralph Campbell.
