Local law enforcement agencies are gearing up for the upcoming holiday weekend.

The second in command at the Ohio State Highway Patrol is under investigation after officials say he let a close friendship stemming from his days at the Zanesville Post of the State Highway Patrol, interfere with an investigation.

The State Highway Patrol spent Thursday morning catching up on paperwork from traffic accidents caused by the winter weather.

In total Lt. Steven Rine of the Zanesville Post said they covered ten accidents Wednesday and two Thursday morning.

The State Highway Patrol said that several accidents helped to close Interstate 77 Wednesday night.

Troopers report that a total of nine crashes took place in both the north and south bound lanes. The accidents took place between US 40 and Interstate 70 on Interstate 77.

Two of those crashes involved semis that jackknifed due to icy conditions.

Some injures were reported but all were minor and no one was transported to the hospital.

Traffic clogs roadways as people begin their holiday travels.

Forty million Americans are expected to take to the roadways this holiday weekend. The State Highway Patrol's Sgt. Chuck Merryman says they see more traffic this weekend than during other holidays.

It's the time of year when you need to be especially cautious on the roadways. Law enforcement officers say they see a drastic increase in wrecks as a result of deer.

Last year alone, close to 25,000 crashes in the state were caused by deer, six were fatalities. In 2009, 468 reported wrecks were noted in Muskingum County. Starting this month, Sergeant Clark Felix says such crashes become more prevalent.

A three-car accident on the East Pike sends three people to the hospital.

Sergeant Jeremy Mendenhall of the State Highway Patrol says it happened around 5:30 p.m. All three vehicles were traveling on the East Pike near Old Wheeling Road. Three out of the four people in the vehicles to be transported.

A woman is taken to the hospital after an accident Wednesday afternoon.

The Highway Patrol says it happened around 2 p.m. at 3630 Adamsville Road.

An accident on Interstate 70 shuts down both Westbound lanes for almost a half hour, and sends one woman to the hospital.

An 80-year-old pilot receives minor injuries after his plane crashes in Licking County.

It happened near a Donn Road home in Newark around 10:15 Sunday morning.
