The unstable economy is creating new trends in the workforce, and some of those changes can be seen in southeastern Ohio.

The jobless numbers seem encouraging here in Muskingum County. Unemployment rates are down from March to April, but so is funding for a summer youth program through the Muskingum Opportunity Center .


Executive Director, Bob Mercer said it's designed to give hish-risk kids the motivation to graduate and prepare them for future careers. The program typically hires 200 kids, but due to less funding, only about 90 kids will be given the opportunity this year.

Community members had an opportunity to network with potential future employers Thursday afternoon.

The 28th annual Zane State job fair was held at the Zanesville Campus Center. The fair was open to students, graduates, and community members. Employers from all over Ohio were there to show community members what they have to offer.

The unemployment rate in Ohio is continuing to decline and that means more jobs are becoming available for area residents.

Job Developer Julie Metzger with the Muskingum County Opportunity Center said this time of year always seems to be promising.

The number of people requesting unemployment benefits has plunged to a nearly three year low. Experts believe companies will increase the pace of hiring this year.

That's proving to be true right here in Muskingum County. The Opportunity Center has recently collected nearly 750 applications for several positions available at Kelloggs.

March is reporting a lower unemployment rate all across Southeastern Ohio.

Muskingum County Opporunity Center Supervisor, Bob Mercer, says those statistics aren't unexpected.

"Typically, this time of year in the spring and going into summer, (You've got) some of the landscaping jobs and you've got construction in our area, " says Mercer.

With an unemployment rate nearing eleven-percent in Ohio, that's making it hard for the younger generation to find summer jobs.

Julie Metzger of the Muskingum County Opportunity Center says the summer job pool is a bit smaller, due to those who are laid off and retired jumping back into the workforce.

As 2009 draws towards its end it's time to decide what you will promise to get right in 2010 and what you won't miss.

With the national unemployment rate at ten percent Denzil Hill says he won't miss being unemployed.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services released unemployment rates for October on Tuesday and most numbers stayed the same for our region.

Morgan County reported the highest  jobless rate in our area at 14.6 %, the same as in September.

Noble County has an unemployment rate of 14.5 %, Perry County's jobless rate for October was 13 %, next is Coshocton County at 12.5 %.

The latest unemployment figures have been released for our area.

Morgan county leads our region with the highest jobless rate for August at 15.7 %, Noble County's unemployment figure dropped a percentage point from July to15 %.

Perry County's jobless rate checks in at 13.8 %, next is Coshocton County at 13.7 %, Muskingum County's jobless rate for the month of August dropped slightly to 12.3 %, Guernsey County has a jobless rate of 11.8...
