Area volunteers are being thanked for their service.

The Muskingum Valley Red Cross hosted a luncheon for all of its volunteers on Tuesday.

"It's our way of sharing our blessings for just good work and very very dedicated and passionate people," said Executive Director Marlene Henderson.

Henderson said the Red Cross would be nothing without its volunteers. She said they help in so many different ways and they are always looking for new recruits.

Bob Melsheimer of Zanesville received the 2010 Genesis Community Service award Thursday evening at the donor appreciation dinner.

The award is given annually and recognizes citizens who have made outstanding contributions not only to the Genesis Healthcare System, but also to the community.

Every day hundreds of volunteers walk through the doors at Genesis Good Samaritan and Bethesda Hospital, to help out the staff, families, and most importantly, the patients.

"They're members of the community, a lot of them use to work at Genesis, so once they retire, they want to give back to the community and where they use to work," said Gift Shop Manager Scott Griffiths.

March is American Red Cross month.

It allows organizations across the country to recognize its volunteers.

"There are literally hundreds of volunteers. We're mobilized by our volunteers. They're the ones that keep us going. The American Red Cross could not do what it does locally and nationwide without our wonderful volunteers that are there for us every day, " says Keely Warden of the Muskingum Valley Red Cross.

The season of giving is upon us, but Christ's Table Executive Director, Gretchen Sayre, says not as many people are willing to donate their time to help those in need, and she says the need is out there now more than ever.

"With the job losses we've had in Muskingum County and surrounding areas, we are seeing a peak influx of our guests coming in. We're thankful that we're able to provide a meal for them, " says Sayre.
