There's nothing like starting the school year off with new gear and some local organizations are joining together to make sure area kids step off the school year in style.

Eastside Community Ministry, Wendy's and WHIZ are currently collecting shoes for this year's Lace Up for Kids Campaign. The goal is to get 1,000 pairs of shoes for students in need.

While kids might not want to hear it, it's already time to think about going back to school.

Three local organizations in the Zanesville Community want to make sure kids have new shoes on their feet for the start of the school year. Wendy's, Eastside Community and WHIZ have teamed up once again for "Lace Up for Kids Campaign." This is the 25th year for the event which kicked off Monday.

This year's Lace Up for Kids will mark a major milestone.

They will surpass the 25,000 shoe mark for donations in the 24th year of the program.

A donation from an area business is helping kids get ready for school.

Coconis Furniture is donating 67 pairs of shoes and $100 to the Wendy's/WHIZ's Lace Up For Kids campaign.  For 23 years, the program has helped to collect new shoes for needy children.

"There's 150 kids still in need, so we're doing our part to help out the community and try to get shoes on kids' feet for the first day of school," said Bo Coconis.

Lace Up For Kids kicked off Monday.

Wendy's Restaurants, the WHIZ Media Group and Eastside Community Ministries are teaming up to collect new tennis shoes for needy children to go back to school. The program was founded by Wendy's restaurant nearly 23 years ago.

Some local kids walked away with a skip in their step today.

The doors to the Civic Community Center opened up at 9 a.m. to provide area children with a new pair of shoes as they head back to school. As families come in, volunteers will meet with them and find the shoe that perfectly fits their foot, and taste.

Blue devils "teamed up" to get new kicks ready for area kids.

As hopes dim that anyone else will be found alive in the rubble of Haiti's Earthquake, Zanesville Wendy's Restaurants join with other regional Wendy's to help the quakes victims in Haiti.

In order to support the Red Cross the restaurants have come together to host a special community night Thursday. All the Zanesville Wendy's locations will be giving 10% of all sales between 5pm-8pm to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief.

An expansion project at the Wendy's on Maple Avenue is now complete and local dignitaries gathered for the restaurant's grand re-opening.

The building was built in 1976 and had not been renovated since.  It took around a half million dollars and five months of construction to create a new interior, exterior and kitchen.

If you drove past a Wendy's restaurant in Zanesville today, you probably saw a group of people picketing the restaurant.

The Bakery Workers Local Number 57 union from the New Bakery plant in Zanesville says it is boycotting Wendy's restaurants because Wendy's buys its buns from the New Bakery and New Bakery is owned by Wendy's International. The bakery workers union is currently in negotiations with the New Bakery for a new contract.
