The city of Zanesville is in a budget crunch and Thursday the Public Safety Committee met to discuss cutbacks at the police and fire departments.

The Zanesville Police Department has to trim around $150,000 off its budget from last year. Chief Eric Lambes said they are cutting back on overtime, going back to a cheaper paint scheme on their vehicles and they will not be filling two open positions.

They may also have to discontinue use of their in-cruiser computer...

Three people are taken to hospital after a two car accident.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 719 and Moxahala Avenue.

Zanesville Police Department Lieutenant Tony Courey says the driver of the truck 48-year-old Raymond Nicholson of Zanesville was traveling west on State Route 719 when he struck 73-year-old Sylvia Stutes and her husband of Duncan Falls.

A suspect in a shooting at the EconoLodge in Zanesville will be formerly charged Friday.

Detective Sergeant Ric Roush at the Zanesville Police Department says the shooting took place around 10:20 Wednesday night. Roush says one shot was fired into the air outside the motel. No one was injured. One indvidual a 32-year-old Louisiana man was taken into custody. His name will be released after charges are filed.

Zanesville Police are releasing more information about a man found dead in the Muskingum River Sunday evening. Detective Sergeant Ric Roush says he is now being identified as a 29-year-old white male from out of town. Roush says he will not yet release the victim’s name or hometown. An eight-year old boy is sent to Good Samaritan Hospital with minor injuries after an afternoon incident.

It happened around 4 p.m. near 627 Munson Road in Zanesville.

Zanesville Police Department Sergeant Chris Phipps says the boy was chasing a dog that got loose and went out the front door of his home, and he failed to look before running out into the street. Phipps says the driver of the vehicle saw the boy and stopped, but the boy ran into the side of the car.

The Zanesville Police Department takes a man into custody after an accident.

It happened on the Maysville Pike around 7:15 p.m. at the intersection of Ohio 719.

Patrolman Tignor says the driver of the car made an illegal right turn at the intersection and ran into the truck.

Neither driver nor the five passengers in the car were injured in the incident, but Tignor conducted an OVI test at the scene and says alcohol may be a factor in the incident.

A patrolman with the Zanesville Police Department spots a break-in at a local business.

Lt. Shaw at the Zanesville Police Department says that around midnight Patrolman Michel saw subjects inside a fenced storage area at Danny's Radiator Shop on Marietta Street. The subjects were in the storage area where scrap metal is stored and were apparently intending to take the scrap metal.

Three men are arrested after an early morning altercation.

It happened at the Cozy Corner Cafe around 1 a.m.

Zanesville Police Department Lieutenant Bill Shaw says the three men had gotten into an argument, which escalated into a violent altercation. Bar employees forced the men outside and locked the doors to prevent them from coming back in.

An officer that was dispatched to the scene approached the men, who fled.

The Zanesville Police are investigating a breaking and entering that took place Wednesday morning at the State Street Market.

Lt. Bill Shaw says that around 4:25am someone broke glass on the door, entered the store and stole cigarettes. Shaw says this is something they've seen over the past few weeks at other locations.

Similar incidents took place at Valero's on West Main Street, but this is the first for the State Street Market.

One Zanesville Police Officer saves the life of a man on Sunday.

Officer Brian Swingle was out on a call, traveling toward the south end of the city, when he saw something unusual from his cruiser. Lieutenant Tony Courey says there was a distraught individual climbing across the railing on the Y-bridge. Swingle stopped his car and was able to grab the man back over the railing.
