For the first time in 32 years, the Zanesville Blue Devils hosted a vasity wrestling match. The dormant program coming back to life this year, with an opportunity Monday afternoon to showcase their talents in front of the entire student body. Principal Mark Ulbrich calling an afternoon assembly to show support for the new program, and coach Jeff Lawless's bunch didn't disappoint, with a 50-30 win over Stivers School for the Arts.

What a first week for the Zanesville Blue Devls at the new Winland Memorial Gymnasium. Three games in the first week of the new home nets three wins for Zanesville, but it wasn't easy. The Blue Devils entered the final frame against Cambridge Saturday night tied with the Bobcats at 29, only to outscore the upstart Cambridge team 14-7 in the fourth quarter, to win by the final tally of 43-36. The shine was off the new Winland Memorial Gymnasium on Friday night, the inaugural game had been played, all that was left was basketball. Some culinary students are celebrating the holidays and also learning some valuable lessons.

The restaurant operations class at Mid-East in Zanesville, taught by Randall Webber, offers students with special needs the opportunity to gain work experience, so they can one day find entry-level jobs in the field. This week they are hand-making and decorating ginger bread houses.

The Zanesville Police Department is struggling to make ends meet as they deal with budget constraints by the city.

City Council is currently battling a nearly $500,000 budget deficit, impacting many departments. Police Chief Eric Lambes said they had to deal with the same problems last year, but now the idea of furlough days is being tossed around, which could adversely affect the community.

The Budget Committee spent three hours Wednesday evening dissecting the city of Zanesville's proposed budget for 2011.

Created by Budget and Finance Director Dale Raines, the committee members reviewed line by line the proposal to figure out how the city can resolve its $500,000 deficit. Department heads were under scrutiny having to explain why they have chosen to use money a certain way.

Zanesville is preparing for winter and offering a few reminders to residents.

Public Service Director Mike Sims said the city has appropriated enough in its budget to have salt available for the remainder of the year. He said they are contracted with the Department of Transportation for next year and doesn't foresee any issues of running out.

He said the crews have to be ready to clear roadways at any time.

Area children are receiving Christmas gifts early this season.

The Rotary Club of Zanesville held its annual Christmas party Tuesday afternoon at Adornetto's Restaurant on Maple Avenue. 63 local elementary school children, their teachers and aides were invited to enjoy a delicious meal and to open up presents given to them by Santa.
