On May 23, 1953, WHIZ-TV began broadcasting at 5:00pm on Channel 50 with just enough power to reach the 500 or so television sets in the Zanesville area.
A year and a half later, WHIZ began broadcasting on channel 18 with an increase in power to 186,000 watts.
In the 1980's WHIZ-TV installed a new antenna that saw a power boost to 589,000 watts and stereo sound.
WHIZ-TV is at the cutting edge of technology with its WHIZ-DT (Digital Television) capabilities.
Broadcasting on Channel 40, WHIZ-DT is delivering television unlike anything seen before. WHIZ High Definition television is on the horizon.
Local news stories, weather forecasts, and sports reports are what WHIZ built its foundation on and for more than 50 years has continued to provide
these services to southeastern and east central Ohio. As an NBC affiliate, WHIZ-TV carries an entire schedule of high quality network programming consisting of news,
daytime, primetime and late night shows. WHIZ-TV also broadcasts a variety of syndicated programs that entertain hundreds of thousands of individuals
in southeast and east central Ohio daily.
A commitment to community has been a trademark of WHIZ-TV since its inception. WHIZ takes great pride in providing outstanding public service to its viewers. Countless volunteer hours from the WHIZ-TV staff and thousands upon thousands of Public Service Announcements that have aired on the station have helped raise millions of dollars for individuals and organizations in the WHIZ-TV viewing area and beyond.
