WHIZ-TV - Southeastern Ohio
  Meet the Sports Team!
Aaron Spragg

Sports Anchor

Born and raised in Zanesville, Aaron Spragg came to WHIZ in 2001 as a well respected member of the community that carried a passion for sports in Southeastern Ohio. He discovered sports broadcasting as a possible career path while watching WHIZ’s Basketball TV Game of the Week between Zanesville and Wheeling Park in 1996. The excitement of telling people about the Blue Devils overtime win sealed his future behind the camera and mic.

A 2003 graduate of Muskingum College, Aaron started working at WHIZ as a member of the production staff where he learned the importance of what happens behind the scenes. This eventually grew into some fill-in play-by-play opportunities on WHIZ radio during his college years, which, in turn, led to an opportunity as a part-time sports reporter and videographer. Aaron became WHIZ main sports anchor in August of 2005.

When it comes to local sports information, Aaron is the go-to guy. He’s been following area high school sports since a young age and witnessed some of the area’s greatest sports moments first hand.

Aside from anchoring the 6 and 11 o’clock sports Monday through Friday, Aaron also serves as the play-by-play voice to WHIZ’s High School Football TV Game of the Week. He is also the “Voice of the Blue Devils”, serving as the play-by-play man for Zanesville High School boy’s basketball.

Some of Aaron’s most memorable sports moments include; calling play-by-play for Muskingum Softball’s 2001 National Championship and covering four Division III College Softball World Series’ since, covering the 2006 Ohio State vs. Michigan football game and National Championship game in Glendale, Arizona against Florida (even though the Buckeyes lost), reporting on Newark Catholic baseball’s three-peat state championship and the River View girl’s basketball team back-to-back state titles.

He adds that talking high school sports in Southeastern Ohio is a privilege everyday and if you see him out at a game stop by and say hello. Have a question? Email him at aspragg@whizmediagroup.com.

In his spare time, Aaron enjoys listening to music, attending concerts, working out and spending time with his future wife Brenda and pet dachshund, Shinoda.

Aaron’s grandfather, Cam Agin, is a former mayor of Zanesville, retired police chief and featherweight champion boxer.
J.T. Raymond

Sports Reporter

JT Raymond, I came to Zanesville after spending 5 years at Muskingum College where I doubled majored in Journalism and History. During my time at Muskingum I was the sports director for WMCO and MCTV while covering all of Muskingum athletics. I was also a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

I grew up in Cadiz, Ohio and was a 2001 graduate of Harrison Central High. While at Harrison Central I was a three sport athlete playing football, basketball, and baseball. I lettered two years in football and baseball. My hobbies include watching SportsCenter and sports on TV, I just can’t shut it off. I’m an avid Ohio State fan along with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins and I will also root for West Virginia.

My favorite sports moments, because I have more than one, occurred January 3rd, 2003 when Ohio State won the national title. Another one occurred in February of 2006 when the Steelers won their 5th Super Bowl. I was there for Jim Burson’s last game as a coach at Muskingum College and one of my favorite memories was the trip to Raleigh in 2005 with the Muskingum Softball team.

I enjoy the area and everyone has been really nice to me. If you ever see me out in the field feel free to stop and say “Hello” and talk sports with me. If you want to talk sports I’ll talk with you, and if you don’t we can find something else to talk about. If you have any story ideas email me at jraymond@whizmediagroup.com.
Mike Thompson

Sports Reporter

Hello to everyone in the Y-City, I’m Mike Thompson and come to Zanesville after graduating from the University of Toledo. While at UT I was the sports director for two and a half years covering all 16 of the Toledo Rockets Division One varsity teams. Also while in college I worked at WUPW Fox Toledo working with former WHIZ employees Adam Kuperstein and Howard Chen.

I grew up not to far from here about one hour west in Westerville. I attended Westerville North High School home of the Warriors where I played baseball and was a catcher. I also got to play baseball on Wrigley field back in the fall of 2000. I was also a ball boy for the Ohio State Basketball team; back in the days of Ricky Dudley, Doug Etzler, Jamie Skelton, and Lawrence Funderburke.

My favorite sports moment occurred on January 3, 1993, when the Buffalo Bills overcame a 32 point deficit at halftime to comeback and beat the Houston Oilers.

I’m looking forward to learning more about the sports in Southeastern Ohio as well as getting to know the teams and players more than just the name on their jerseys. If you have any story ideas please send me an e-mail at mthompson@whizmediagroup.com.
