Economy Affecting Horse Industry

The sluggish economy has affected many areas including the horse industry.

Contests like the Muskingum Valley Partners Summer Extravaganza are working to put money back into the industry.

“It has affected some of the horse shows,” said Connie VanSickle of MVP. “It costs so much to get them there, plus your entry fees. That’s why a show like this is good. It gives them back money.”

Robin Wronk of MVP says contests like today’s allow for all ages to participate.

“We have all ages groups,” said Wronk. “In the pee wee barrel class, these are your youngest competitors. We have some that are 6 and 7. We see some nice horses that really take care of the kids.”

Wronk says yesterday’s competition focused on performance and showmanship, while today’s competition focused on contest events. Contest events put the rider and horse against the clock for the fastest time.
