Nearly 200 people were arrested today, but it’s not what you might think.
It’s all for a good cause — the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Those arrested were asked to spend some of their time behind bars calling friends, family and businesses to raise additional funds for the organization.
"We are arresting Zanesville’s finest at their workplace or at their home and bringing them here in hopes they’re going to raise their bail money for mda today," said Director of the East Columbus District of the Muscular Dystrophy Association Amie Jones.
The money raised from today’s Jail and Bail will go toward services the association provides for those suffering from muscular dystrophy.
"We have a summer camp program where kids are in school where kids are can come out to," said Jones. "We help out with the purchase of equipment like wheelchairs, leg braces. We also do flu shots and our clinic program."
Zanesville firefighters were dispatched to pick up those arrested like WHIZ’s own Kelly Gilmartin.
WHIZ was able to obtain exclusive footage of her arrest. However, we have learned she was able to post her bond relatively quickly, raising $1,700.
The organization hopes to raise $35,000 total from the volunteers arrested.
