Drinking water at thousands of schools across the country has been found to contain unsafe levels of lead, pesticides and dozens of other toxins.

An Associated Press investigation found that contaminants have surfaced at public and private schools in all 50 states, but the problems have largely gone unmonitored by the Federal Government.

In our area several schools appear on the list of violations, Hopewell Elementary, Canaan Mennonite Church and School, Conesville Elementary and Toboso Elementary all had traces of coliform, while Licking Valley Junior High had both arsenic and coliform and Licking Valley High School had traces of arsenic. All problems with the water have since rectified.

California leads the nation at 612 violations followed by Ohio at 451. The cotamination is most aparrent at schools with wells, which represent 8-11% of the nation’s schools.
