The Muskingum County Commissioners are raising fees to help get the Building Department out of the red. The Commissioners met with Jim Waymer, the Chief Building Official, about the current financial situation for the department.
Waymer says his department is currently $58,000 in the red. The Commissioners approved that re-inspections will now cost $309. Also, the Commissioners approved 2 to 1, with Commissioner Hill against, to raise the flat rate fee 10%. The Commissioners haven’t raised the rates in 6 years.
The rate increase is in response to the state of Ohio raising it’s flat rate fee 25%. Commissioner Bates says,"Business is business and a department can not operate in the red". If the fee had not been raised, they say more staff would have been cut or the county would have to pay the difference.
