City and state officials gathered with community members Friday at the Zanesville Country Club to help bring awareness to domestic violence.

Around 70 people attended Transitions Fundraising Luncheon. This is the 30th year Transitions has held the luncheon and last year it raised $5,000. The keynote speaker today is Ohio Supreme Court Justice Evelyn Stratton. She says it is important to break the cycle of domestic violence.

"I think everybody should get more involved.  I think the court system here should get more involved, I think the community should get more involved, it is very difficult to understand domestic violence and say well why don’t they just walk away, why don’t they just leave.  You have to understand the mental health issues involved in domestic violence and what creates the cycle of abuse and once you do understand, you understand how trapped these people are," says Justice Stratton.

Justice Stratton says during her speech she wants to motivate people to help within their community.

"So I want to empower them that even though they may feel they are a housewife or retired or don’t think they have anything to give, everybody can contribute to make life better for others," tells Justice Stratton.

Transitions provides a safe house, community outreach, a help hot-line and teaches women life skills. This year alone, Transitions has helped more than 1,800 people. Organizers say Friday’s fundraiser will help pay for all those programs.

"It is so important because not only does it raise funds to assist these people and these families which really takes a toll on our whole community, it raises the awareness.  October is domestic violence month," says Gigi Monath a volunteer with Transitions.

Besides the luncheon, Transitions also held a silent auction with items donated by people and businesses in the community.

Officials at Transitions say their help hot-line is always open: (740) 454-3213.  To donate to Transitions, mail check or cash to:
