A local family, that has been touched by cancer several times, is trying to help others in the community fight their battles with cancer.
Hundreds have been gathering at the Saint Rose Parish Community Center for Kat’s Memorial Cancer Benefit.
Event coordinator, Cheryl Dodson, says they hope to raise about 10 thousand dollars for the Perry County Cancer Alliance. It’s an organization that was founded back in 1999 to help cancer patients financially.
"They could buy a wig. They could pay bills. Whatever they wanted to do with it. Over the last 10 years, they’ve given $80,000 back, " says Dodson.
Dodson says she has lost seven family members to cancer over the years.
"With every single person, it’s different. When I lost my mom, I was only eight or nine years old. So, I didn’t know what I was going through then, but to lose a sister that we are so close to is tough, " says Dodson.
She says the fight against cancer is so important because most of us know someone who is battling it or who has battled it.
"If you haven’t, you’re extremely blessed. I think cancer, especially in this small county, 650 some people they’ve helped since 1999, that’s a lot of people in a small county. So, if you haven’t been touched by cancer in some way, shape, or form, you’re blessed, " says Dodson.
The event is expected to wrap up at midnight.
