Thanksgiving is one time out of the year when we get to sit down with family and enjoy a home-cooked feast.
Many of us tend to stuff ourselves with turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie…saying it’s just one day out of the year where we don’t have to watch what we eat.
Yet, nutritionist Sarah Brauning says that one day has a bigger impact on you than you might think.
"If you think about the holidays, most people put on a couple pounds, and that doesn’t always sound like a lot, but over 20 years, it’s 40 extra pounds, not including anything else that was put on during the year, " says Brauning.
Brauning says there’s one main reason why we tend to overeat this time of year.
"Food is comforting to a lot of us. You know, a lot of us eat because it makes us feel good temporarily, " says Brauning.
However, Brauning offers some tips to help you stay trim during the holidays: look at recipes ahead of time to see if you can use lower calorie ingredients; make your own plate for the meal; and if you do eat a little more, offset it by exercising a little bit longer.
